The Dangers of Rodent Droppings

The Hanta Virus is a virus that’s a microscopic organism that now has been recognized to cause a newly described disease called Hantavirus Pulmonary Syndrome.  It s said that approximately 50% of people that contract the disease die from it.

Hanta Virus is transmitted by rodents who carry the virus.  The primary species that transmit the disease is the cotton rat and the deer mouse. The virus is probably released through the rodent’s urine, droppings, and saliva. Once the virus is released it doesn’t live very long, maybe a few days.  Transmission of the virus occurs when dust is stirred up while cleaning or moving items that have been contaminated by the rats droppings.  The virus then becomes airborne and is easily inhaled.

When working in pack rat conditions, you should always wear your respirator and gloves during your investigation.

In your everyday life it is extremely important to always rinse off tops of canned sodas or foods, because even in modern upper class super markets rats and mice make there rounds, especially in the warehouse.
